On January 25, 2018, The U.S. Department of Justice announced a new policy that prohibits use of its civil enforcement authority to convert agency guidance documents into binding rules.

Each year, the Women & the Law Division solicits nomination for its Mentor Award, seeking to honor a female legal professional who's exhibited exceptional efforts to be a mentor to other women in the profession. This year, the division has selected Tracy Betz of Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP as the honorable recipient.

The Justice Department has “systemic” problems in how it handles sexual harassment complaints, with those found to have acted improperly often not receiving appropriate punishment, and the issue requires “high level action,” according to the department’s inspector general.

The Women and the Law Division of the Indianapolis Bar Association is in the process of selecting its Executive Committee members for 2017.  We currently have an active Executive Committee, which meets monthly in order to plan and execute social events, educational programming and community service initiatives. 

In 2017, the WLD recognized a need to honor female attorneys who are on the path to becoming trailblazers while also demonstrating a commitment to mentoring others. Not only are these women the future leaders in the legal profession, but they are making a concerted effort to help mentor and train additional future trailblazers

Women lawyers in the nation’s top law firms make up nearly a fifth of equity partners, but the numbers could improve as women make up a greater percentage of new equity partner classes.

It is common for judges to publish guidance for lawyers who appear in their courtrooms on how to conduct themselves with regard to minor matters like how and when to file motions. But on Wednesday, Jack B. Weinstein, a senior federal judge in Brooklyn, used this typically mundane process to address an issue of growing concern to many in the legal profession: the lack of female lawyers in leading roles at trials and other court proceedings.
