The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit finds Trader Joe’s federal trademark and unfair competition claims against Vancouver-based retailer Michael Norman Hallatt, d/b/a Pirate Joe’s, sufficiently allege conduct that could impact American commerce to justify extraterritorial application of the Lanham Act.

Derek Lavender, a young patent attorney with Taft Stettinius & Hollister and member of the IndyBar Intellectual Property Section, was recently in a very severe motorcycle accident on his way to the office.  Thankfully, Derek survived, but he suffered serious injuries, including one to his spinal cord.  Derek and his wife, LeAnne, have a long road to recovery ahead of them--physically, emotionally, and financially. To learn more about the Lavenders' story, see LeAnne's blog at https://thelavenderslongshot.wordpress.com/.
