IndyBar IP Section – Executive Committee
Meeting Minutes
January 2017

In attendance:

1.New Chair Joel Tragesser opened the meeting. The IP Section has 138 members.

2.Bill McKenna gave report of IndyBar Chair retreat in November at French Lick Resort. The IndyBar encourages the IP section to interact more with our members as well as other sections.

3.Kim Ferguson provided a report of statistics to the IP Section’s portion of the IndyBar’s website during the last two months:

• 46 and 43 home page visitors.
•15 and 18 blog views.

Matthew Clark will continue to encourage and assist members with posting blogs, articles and the like.  If you have written an article or come across an interesting article, simply provide the link to Kim and Matt with a few comments for posting.

4. In regard to seminars, Deneen Fitzgerald advised that the IndyBar would like (i) to avoid seminar topics that have been presented in the last three years, though update programs are acceptable, (ii) to have a few advanced level programs, (iii) to limit CLE Plus seminars to four, and (iv) to have multi-hour seminars.  The committee outlined the following potential topics

                a.    March 2017                         2016 Copyright and Trademark Year in Review

  • Format - one hour CLE Plus presentation
  • Matthew Clark will speak on Trademarks
  • Craig Pinkus will speak again on Copyright

                b.    TBD                                        2016 Patent Year in Review

  • Format - one hour CLE Plus presentation
  • Trenton Morton of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP has volunteered to organize

                c.     TBD                                        Chief IP & Corporate Counsel Roundtable with IndyBar Business Section

  • Format - one hour CLE Plus panel discussion
  • Joel Tragesser will coordinate with Mac McDaniel of the IndyBar Business Section
  • Topics TBD

                d.    TBD                                        Advanced IP Practices

  • Format - one hour CLE Plus presentation
  • Speakers TBD

                e.    December 2017 Annual IP Ethics

  • Format - two-three hour presentation
  • Seeking members to update presentation

Also, Kim Ferguson encourages the section to take advantage of videos to promote activities.  Joel Tragesser will be taping a 2017 welcome message to the membership.  CLE speakers should plan to record a brief video, and we may ask seminar attendees for a brief interview after each presentation.

5. In regard to social events, Bill McKenna suggested a year-end holiday luncheon at the IndyBar offices with the Business Group, and Mac McDaniel is open to co-hosting and plans to present the idea to the IndyBar Business Section Executive Committee for consideration.  Matthew Clark and Joel Tragesser are organizing an Indy Fuel hockey game with the IndyBar Sports and Entertainment Law section, which SmithAmundsen LLC will sponsor.

6. In regard to the patent law exam scholarship, Deneen Fitzgerald will report on needed tasks at the next committee meeting so we are prepared to offer this scholarship to law students at IU Maurer and IU McKinney.

7. Next meeting: Monday, March 20, 2017 at noon.  Executive Committee meetings are encouraged to attend with suggestions for seminar topics and speakers.  Also, Executive Committee will vote on new members to the committee so contact Joel Tragesser if interested in filling a vacancy.
