Women’s Caucus at IU McKinney School of Law would like to extend an invitation to IndyBar members to attend our 42nd Annual  Women’s Caucus Auction. Each year, the Women’s Caucus Auction is one of the biggest student organization events at the law school thanks to the generosity of local attorneys, businesses, and students in the Indianapolis community.

Since 2000, the number of mothers that die in America after giving birth has gone up every single year. According to the Center for Disease Control, 60% of these deaths are entirely preventable, from causes like high blood pressure, blood loss, and infection. Here’s some insight into how this crisis is being caused, and what new and expecting mothers should watch out for.

Each year, the Women and the Law Division presents its Mentorship Award, which seeks to honor a female legal professional who's exhibited exceptional efforts to be a mentor to other women in the profession. This year, the division has selected Debbie Caruso of Rubin & Levin PC as the honorable recipient.

A recent article in the Harvard Business Review addressed the variety of reasons why women are less likely to be conspicuous self-promoters at work. Women were often concerned (and according to the data, maybe rightfully so) that being seen as too assertive could actually be a detriment to their careers. And importantly, women tended to favor a collaborative leadership style that simply felt more comfortable to them than a more individually-focused approach to achieving goals.

On October 23, retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor announced that she had been diagnosed “with the beginning stages of dementia, probably Alzheimer’s disease.” Ironically, when Justice O’Connor retired from the Supreme Court in 2006, it was to care for her husband who had suffered from Alzheimer’s for almost two decades.

Please take a moment to nominate a female attorney who has demonstrated a sincere commitment to mentoring other women in the legal profession. The deadline for nominations is December 3, 2018. The recipient of the award will be honored at the 2019 WLD Mentoring Luncheon.

Under the new policy, employees can receive 10 subsidized backup days of childcare. And the subsidy is a real one: center-based backup care will cost $5 per day, and in-home backup childcare will cost as little as $1 an hour. In-Home care is an especially important option for parents with lower earnings, especially if they are working evenings, weekends, or variable hours.

The Women and the Law Division of the Indianapolis Bar Association is in the process of selecting its slate for the 2019 Executive Committee and positions are available for new committee members.

According to a newly-released ABA study, women and people of color report feeling that they are held to a higher standard than other colleagues, and only half of women of color reported having equal access to meaningful assignments that lead to promotion.
