Judge Claudia Wilken of the Nothern District of California has held that the NCAA’s grant-in-aid cost of attendance limitations are an impermissible restraint on trade under the Sherman Act.

On March 8, 2019, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken issued an injunction prohibiting the NCAA from enforcing rules that are “overly and unnecessarily restrictive.” In yet another decision, Judge Wilken changed the landscape of the NCCA’s amateurism and compensation rules.

An adidas executive, a former adidas consultant, and an aspiring sports agent were each sentenced 6-9 months in federal prison for the involvement in the recruiting scandal that was investigated by the FBI.

Following the scandal involving former Michigan State gymnastics’ Dr. Larry Nassar and the subsequent $500M settlement, Michigan State’s new insurance policy “broadly excludes insurer liability for sexual misconduct.” This has forced the university to consider new insurance options such as creating its own captive insurance policy.
