Unfortunately, most law schools are designed to teach you how to think like a lawyer and don’t devote much time teaching you how to start and run a business.

Although finding a mentor is a good idea and comes with immeasurable benefits, rarely does anyone explain exactly how a fledgling solo should go about finding a mentor.

Many lawyers experience moments of joy without running their own law practice. Running a practice can be challenging and painful. It’s not for everyone.

Lawyers with different backgrounds bring diverse opinions. Different opinions drive better decision-making. A more diverse and equitable legal industry produces more innovative and creative solutions. Many successful firms have attorneys from diverse backgrounds that represent the clients and communities they serve. However, efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion within our industry can pose unique challenges for small and solo law firms. 

The fourth quarter of the year will begin and a group of newly-admitted attorneys will begin the rigorous yet rewarding task of being a lawyer. For those new attorneys who will be hanging out their shingles later this year or early 2022, there are many unknowns and uncertainties when it comes to not only practicing law but running a business. 

As the coronavirus, resultant lockdowns and their effect continue to press every sector of society, lawyers continue to respond to what they hope is a blip. Only, it’s not a blip. 

The reason your accounts receivable are high is the same reason every other process in your law firm is relatively untamed: because you don’t apply systems to managing your business.

While most attorneys think that raising rates is a dangerous step, there are ways to manage it without alienating new or existing clients.

Most law firm data and information is "siloed." What I mean by that is that most law firm software programs are not able to "talk" to each other.
