On Tuesday morning, February 18, 2020, the Health Law Society teamed up with the Indianapolis Bar Association to host a Breakfast with the Bar event at the Indiana University (IU) Robert H. McKinney School of Law. In attendance were law students from all three class years and Indianapolis attorneys from various health law practices with differing degrees of experience. As such, in an intimate group discussion, each attendant shared their experiences, asked and answered unique questions, and learned about one another—all while sipping coffee and indulging in delectable pastries.

The Indianapolis Bar Foundation is proud to offer almost $7,000 in academic and educational scholarships to deserving students each year. This year, the IBF is offering up to four $600 scholarships for the upcoming summer IndyBar Review course as well as three $1,500 academic scholarships. Applications are now open for the 2020 scholarships, and the deadline to apply for all is March 1.

During Breakfast with the Bar: Intellectual Property, students learned that patents represent only a third of the main areas within intellectual property. Copyrights and trademarks collectively represent the remaining areas. Students were also informed of intellectual property-related rights such as right of publicity and trade secrets.

Few — if any — bar associations around the country have a separate and distinct law student-run entity that comes close to matching our level of programming and involvement. But the evolving nature of the legal field, both educationally and professionally, requires constant re-evaluation to make sure we remain in front of the curve.

The lawyers provided helpful tips on a variety of topics, including what it was like to start a firm immediately after graduation, the challenges of handling administrative duties alongside practicing law, figuring out a particular area of law on which to focus, finding clients/developing client relationships and the importance of having good mentors who can provide guidance.

On the morning of Thursday, Oct. 24, a group of 10 law students and seven attorneys gathered at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law to discuss in-house and alternative legal positions for attorneys. The attorney speakers spanned a large range of industries and experience, which was extremely beneficial to the law students in attendance.
