The order requires all staff members and visitors over the age of two to wear a face covering that covers the nose and mouth during court hearings, trials or similar proceedings at the City-County Building.

The events of the past few weeks—the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, as well as the numerous incidents of explicit bigotry, bias and brutality throughout our country’s history—are disturbing, infuriating and heartbreaking. The measure of a civilization and the character of our country is dependent on how we treat each other. Humanity demands that we be kind and respectful to each other. The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Indiana stands in solidarity with the black community in Indiana and across the country.

We, the elected and appointed leaders of the Indianapolis Bar Association, pledge to do the work necessary to bring about change to achieve equality, diversity and inclusion in the Indianapolis legal community and beyond. To Indianapolis lawyers, law students and paralegals and the community at large, we are committed to immediate action to investigate and report on the state of equality, diversity and inclusion within our Indianapolis legal network and to enact policies to eliminate barriers and grow a more diverse and inclusive legal community.

As President-Elect of the Indianapolis Bar Association, I did not want to write this message about racial injustice. As an American citizen, I regret that I have to write this message about inequality. As a representative of the more than 4,000 members of the IndyBar with varying back-grounds, opinions, experiences and positions, it is incredibly difficult to write this message on behalf of all members about the current state of our country, state and city. As a black man in America, it is virtually impossible to write this message and express my true feelings and the feelings of other black people in America.
