This year the Indianapolis Bar Foundation (IBF) celebrates its 50th Anniversary. The Honorable Paul Buchanan, Jr. served as the first president of the bar foundation back in 1968. The IBF was created to serve as the charitable arm of the Indianapolis Bar Association and to advance justice and assist those in need. Fourteen years later, then IndyBar Executive Director Rosie Felton led the charge to create a group of lawyers who would help sustain the IBF’s charitable mission by providing funds to support it efforts.

Each year, the IndyBar offers hundreds of educational programs, social events and opportunities for community involvement, all while introducing new resources and services to serve members of the legal profession. None of these important contributions would be possible without the work of many lawyers, paralegals and law students “behind the scenes” on section and division executive committees.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana has announced that Indianapolis Bar Association member James R. Sweeney II today took the oath of office to become a United States District Judge. Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson administered the oath at 11 a.m., fulfilling the final step in Judge Sweeney’s ascension to the bench.

I don’t like to brag, but I’m going to go ahead and say it: I’m undefeated. As head coach of a 4-year-old soccer team, I’ve never lost a single game. Of course, it helps that I’m in a recreational league where keeping track of wins and losses is forbidden.

What you’ll find unique about Kevin Tyra’s contribution to pro bono work in our community is that his commitment is not restricted to the time he invests providing services, but more remarkably that he took the initiative to develop a new outlet for the provision of pro bono legal services when he co-founded the Ozanam Free Legal Clinic.
