The Bolton Award, the National Association of Bar Executive's (NABE) highest accolade, is presented biennially to a bar executive who epitomizes the highest standard of professional excellence. The award is named in honor of Fred Bolton, executive director and secretary of the Pennsylvania Bar Association from 1966 to 1977.

Litigators begin each case with plenty to learn. New facts. A client’s strategic priorities. Perhaps a new area of substantive law, new industry, or new government agency. 

Because our clients’ disputes are not resolved by abstract AI platforms—at least not yet—thoughtful lawyers must also plan their cases for a particular audience. Studying local rules or a particular judge’s courtroom procedures might mean the difference between a process focused on the parties’ substantive disputes and a lawyer’s dented credibility—or worse. A particular federal circuit or state might take a distinctive approach to the substantive law. Even the resources available to a given judge can inform the best way to present your client’s case. 

IndyBar has you covered. First, it asked me to share some of my own strategies when practicing in our own Southern District of Indiana. That may have you doubting the collective IndyBar wisdom. But it gets better. IndyBar is also hosting a full-day CLE exploring all aspects of federal practice in the Southern District. More on that later, but first a few tips.

Congratulations to IndyBar Board Member, the Hon. Charnette Garner, for receiving the National Bar Association’s Women Lawyers Division’s award for Outstanding Lawyer in Public Service!


Professor Michael J. Pitts has been named the Cleon H. Foust Professor of Law at IU McKinney. This endowed professorship will be a three-year appointment. Professor Pitts’ scholarly work focuses on the law of democracy, particularly voting rights and election administration.


Esther Earbin Sandlin has recently joined Ice Miller. Esther’s practice primarily focuses on intellectual property, as well as privacy and data protection. She also advises clients on compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and emerging international regulations.

Each year, the Antoinette Dakin Leach Award recognizes the significant accomplishments of a “trailblazing” female attorney in central Indiana. Named after the first Hoosier woman to challenge bar admission based on gender, Dakin Leach was admitted to practice law in Indiana in 1893. Thereafter, she fought for more than fifteen years until finally admitted to the State Bar Association in 1909. 

The WLD is currently seeking nominations for the 2023 ADL award. We’re looking for female attorneys who emulate Dakin Leach’s passion for the law as well as her dedication to supporting other women in the profession.

Most lawyers are busier than they’ve ever been. Even so, lurking with the Indianapolis Bar Association should be part of an Indy-area legal professional’s day.

Don’t know what lurking is?  Lurking on social media is being a consumer rather than a content creator.  This includes social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube/Vimeo, Facebook, NextDoor, Twitter, and blogs. What you may not fully appreciate is that lurking, particularly with an organization like IndyBar is a professional enhancement tool, and you’ll find IndyBar in all these channels.

It’s mid-December and the end of the first semester of your 1L year. You’re exhausted but jittery, chasing last night’s midnight Red Bull with a Venti Americano and a backpack granola bar, flattened by hornbooks. Your bank app alert buzzes the phone in your pocket and you see that this month’s rent cleared, a poor investment as you’ve spent the past four weeks in one of two locations: the library, studying, or the library bathroom, trying not to cry (again).

Rachel Bir has joined Paganelli Law Group. She represents clients in commercial and civil litigation cases. She also has extensive experience related to renewable energy litigation, including judicial review of administrative agency decisions, challenges to board of zoning appeals’ actions, and tax appeals. 



Magistrate Drew Bloch was recently named as the winner of the Nanette K. Raduenz Award. The Nanette K. Raduenz Award is given every other year to honor a judicial officer who has gone above and beyond to improve the judiciary. Magistrate Bloch was recognized for his activity in both the ISBA Family Law Section and many other organizations. He has served on several boards and committees, presented at numerous seminars, and helped revise family law guidelines.
 


Nicolette Mendenhall has started a new position as Director of Legal Services at Indiana Department of Transportation. She provides legal advice to INDOT and its employees on a wide array of issues including permitting issues, contractual issues, construction project planning, public record requests, administrative law, procurement, federal and state compliance requirements, right-of-way, real estate matters, and more.

 


Julie Denise Owens has recently joined the Office of Chief Counsel for the IRS in Los Angeles, CA.

 


Elizabeth Polleys Burden was promoted to the Steering Committee, Roche Women’s Alliance at Roche and also joined the Core Team for Roche International Women’s Network. As part of the Core Team she represents the community of women’s professional networks across the Roche Pharma and Diagnostics organizations and promotes Roche's DEI initiatives - specifically gender diversity in leadership levels.

The nomination period has begun for the 2024 Boards of Directors for the Indianapolis Bar Association AND the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. There are also opportunities for service with the Association's Section and Division Executive Committees.  Volunteering with IndyBar is an invaluable opportunity to play a role in the future of our legal community.

The following vacancies exist for the Association's Board of Directors for the coming year and must be filled by an attorney or judicial member. Board service will begin on January 1, 2024. Self nominations as well as nominations of colleagues are both encouraged.

  • 1st Vice President (one-year term and will automatically assume the office of President-elect in 2025)
  • Treasurer (two-year term, 2024 and 2025)
  • At-Large Director (five positions, each two-year terms, 2024 and 2025)

The 2024 IndyBar Association Board of Directors will be led by David Duncan of Scannell Properties. Lee Christie of Christie Farrell Lee & Bell will assume the role of President-elect.

The IndyBar Foundation Board of Directors has the following vacancies for 2024:

  • 1st Vice President (one-year term and will automatically assume the office of President-elect in 2025, preference given to current board members)
  • Treasurer (one-year term, preference given to current board members)
  • Secretary (one-year term, preference given to current board members)
  • DEI Director (one-year term)
  • At-Large Director (six positions, each two-year terms, 2024 and 2025)

The 2024 IndyBar Foundation President will be Travis Jensen of Johnson Jensen LLP.  Briana Clark of Dentons Bingham Greenebaum will assume the role of President-elect.

To indicate interest in service of both or either board the nomination form found at indybar.org/board should be submitted by Tuesday, August 1, 2023. You may also use the same form to indicate interest in volunteering with an Association Section or Division Executive Committee or a standing committee of the Foundation.

Who is the ideal board candidate?
There is no “ideal” leadership candidate. IndyBar wants its leadership to include individuals with diverse practice and life backgrounds so that it can make well-rounded decisions that reflect its entire membership. IndyBar seeks true diversity in its boards.  The Nominating Committees of both organizations will endeavor to choose slates of nominees, which reflect IndyBar’s geographic, ethnic, racial, identity, and practice area diversity while recognizing leadership and service to the local bar.

What do board members do?

The role of each board differs. Association board members are responsible for strategic thinking, planning and evaluating on behalf of the association.
The Foundation board is a fundraising board.  These leaders bring creativity and energy to actively raise dollars to support the charitable activities of the local bar and other law-related Indianapolis bar organizations. They both “give” and “get” with a minimum annual personal donation of $300 while working as a team to meet an annual fundraising goal that is typically at least $300,000.

While IndyBar staff and volunteers typically execute IndyBar programs, the boards are responsible for adding energy to the ideas and policies generated, elevating the positive profile of the organizations and their endeavors, actively and visibility attending/supporting bar programs/events, and planning for the needs of central Indiana legal community members.

Excellent board members are prepared, visibility support the organization, keep their commitments, speak their minds, build relationships within the board, adapt personal experiences to make the association more dynamic, and understand the resources available within the association.

What do board members get in return for their service?
Previous IndyBar Board members have attested to the tremendous value of board service. In addition to impressive line items for their resumes, they have reported significant professional and personal benefits, including: the opportunity to meet, work with and learn from community leaders; the chance to share their own knowledge, expertise and training with others; professional recognition that elevates their stature within the community at large; valuable work experience that opens the door to new career opportunities; and relationships with new friends and lifelong mentors.

How much time does board service require?
Although board members must be willing to invest time preparing for and thoughtfully participating in board meetings, the time commitment is not onerous. The board meets at least nine times a year for no more than one and a half hours, has a two-and-a half-hour summer assessment progress meeting and holds an overnight planning retreat every November. The Association's overnight retreat will be November 9-18, 2023 and the Foundation's will be December 7-8, 2023.  Board members are expected to attend the Bench Bar Conference and serve as a board liaison to a committee or working group and miscellaneous other educational programs and activities.

How do I nominate a candidate?
Complete the online nomination here. The IndyBar will then contact the candidate with the link to the board application.

Can I nominate myself?
Yes. IndyBar members may nominate themselves for board service by following the same procedures they would use in order to nominate someone else.

What’s the nomination process?
Submit your nomination at indybar.org/board through August 1, 2023. Nominated members will be asked to supply more information to the nominating committee no later than early August. The committee will review the nominations based on the criteria and will request interviews with all candidates no later than early August. All IndyBar members submitting letters of interest will receive an interview. Once interviews are completed, the committee will then recommend one candidate per position for the slate, which will be presented to the current Board of Directors. For the Association only, if no vacancies are contested, the board of directors will accept the slate.  The Foundation Board of Directors votes upon the Foundation slate.  Both slates will be posted on the IndyBar website no later than October 4, 2023.

What if I’m not selected?
Each year there are more applicants than spots available, so it is likely that well-qualified, interviewed candidates will not be slated. A member of the organization's nominating committee will telephone all interviewed candidates with the goal of speaking with each within five business days. Each organization's President-elect will endeavor to discuss the myriad other volunteer opportunities within the IndyBar for the coming year with all applicants. It our goal to enhance engagement opportunities for all members.
