As recently highlighted on our section blog post reviewing Hastings v. Ford Motor Co., federal courts strictly adhere to the discovery rules and do not hesitate to rule against parties for ignoring or abusing these rules. Other recent federal court decisions, like Vera Bradley Designs, Inc. v. Li, continue the trend, calling out plaintiffs and defendants alike on their behaviors during the discovery process.

A recent order entered in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California provides helpful guidance on drafting requests for production under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and additional considerations for developing discovery dispute strategies. In this case, the purchaser of a 2013 Ford F-350 truck brought several claims arising from an allegedly defective engine. The purchaser sought to compel production of information in connection with 12 requests for production.
