Having spent five years with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, I may be a bit biased about the benefits of a judicial clerkship, but I would be doing a disservice to my female colleagues if I did not emphasize some of those benefits as often as possible. To that end, I will highlight three key advantages here: (1) mentorship and guidance; (2) networking opportunities; and (3) unique experience.
First, one of the foremost advantages of a judicial clerkship is the unparalleled mentorship and guidance that it offers to individuals in the legal profession, and especially for women. For me personally, I had the great pleasure of working for and with two female Magistrate Judges, Doris L. Pryor and M. Kendra Klump, who served (and continue to serve) as my mentors, providing valuable insights, feedback, and advice. Specifically, those relationships have allowed me to develop my confidence and learn how to use my voice, all of which gives me access to the wisdom and encouragement needed to navigate the challenges of a still male-dominated field.
Second, a judicial clerkship provides a unique platform for women to build a strong professional network. The legal community, especially in Indianapolis, is a tightly-knit world, and clerks have the chance to interact with lawyers, fellow clerks, and other legal professionals who can open doors to various opportunities like job offers, partnerships, or other collaborations. Networking with judges and lawyers from diverse backgrounds broadens our perspectives and allows us to access different viewpoints and strategies used in the legal field.
Third, and perhaps most importantly, the hands-on experience offered by a judicial clerkship is largely unmatched in the legal world. Clerks work closely with judges, assisting in researching, drafting opinions, and observing courtroom proceedings. Clerkships provide a front-row seat to courtroom proceedings, allowing us to witness different advocacy styles and court dynamics. The experience gained during a clerkship is also highly regarded by law firms, government agencies, and other employers, opening doors to prestigious career opportunities.
A judicial clerkship serves as a catalyst for career growth, and can help women navigate the intricacies of the legal world with confidence and resilience. As women continue to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings in the legal arena, a judicial clerkship stands as a powerful tool to aid them on the journey to success.
