Q. Thanks for agreeing to be WLD’s April Member of the Month!
- My pleasure! Thank you so much for thinking of and inviting me!
Q. Tell us where you’re from and where you went to law school.
- I am originally from Naperville, Illinois, which is a suburb thirty or so miles west of Chicago. After graduating from Purdue University and marrying my high school sweetheart, I moved to Indianapolis with my husband so that he could start medical school. Once we were settled, I applied to and was accepted at IU McKinney School of Law, where I had some of my best experiences. Having lived in Indiana for more than a decade now, I can't imagine anywhere else being home.
Q. You work at the Indiana Supreme Court---more specifically what do you do?
- Sure! I am a judicial law clerk to Justice Molter. Generally, I perform a variety of tasks, including researching legal issues, drafting memoranda and court opinions, proofreading, and cite-checking.
Q. What’s a typical day like?
- While each day varies based on our "chambers' schedule," a typical day involves reviewing transfer petitions or other documents/cases before the court, researching specific legal issues, drafting either transfer or bench memoranda, and touching base with Justice Molter and my co-clerk about the different tasks I'm working on.
Q. What do you find most rewarding about your job?
- Although some tasks may be challenging at first, I truly enjoy developing a deeper understanding of the law. Over the past eighteen months or so, I've never experienced a "boring" day. Instead, I've always learned something new, and I'm excited to apply these skills in my career moving forward. Also, I've genuinely enjoyed developing long-lasting relationships not only with my former and current co-clerks but also Justice Molter, who I am so grateful to have as a mentor. Each day, I look forward to making my (short) trek to the State House. I love the work that we do and the people I work with.
Q. What was your reason for joining IndyBar’s Women in the Law Division?
- Honestly, I wanted to join the WLD for female mentorship. While in law school, I was an active member of our Women's Caucus, and I had the pleasure of attending different events sponsored by the WLD. I met so many wonderful women through our programs and made many forever friends. So, after law school, I wanted to continue building upon that female camaraderie. As a woman balancing a busy family life with just starting her career, it's been so wonderful to expand my network through the WLD and use my fellow WLD members as a sounding board for different career and life questions.
Q. Anything in your personal life you’d like to share?
- Of course! My husband and I have been happily married for roughly eight years. We are proud "fur-parents" to Penny, an orange tabby cat. During our free time, we love to try new cuisines, watch movies, and do DIY projects around the house.
Q. Any fun travel recently?
- Yes! A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I traveled to Paris for my 30th birthday. We had a fantastic time, and it was so nice to get away and spend a little (uninterrupted) time together--especially given our busy schedules. We did everything from visiting the Louvre to Disneyland Paris to Versailles. My favorite part was walking down the Champs-Elysees, which is an avenue full of shops and essentially a glamorous version of Chicago's Magnificent Mile. It was certainly a trip to remember!
