Rebecca, can you tell us a little about your practice?
I am the founder of my own practice, Rebecca W. Geyer & Associates, PC, where I concentrate my practice in estate planning, estate and trust administration, elder law, tax planning and business services. I am board certified trust and estate specialist and a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

How did you become a trust and estate attorney?
I am actually a third-generation lawyer. My father practiced a variety of civil work, and I liked the aspect of getting to help people in a tangible way. Then, as a child, I had the experience of helping to care for an elderly grandparent. It was this experience that made me realize I loved caring for the elderly and I knew that being an elder law attorney would allow me to provide the help that would make an impact in a person’s life.

You were recently sworn in as the IndyBar president for 2023, what led you to become active in the organization and ultimately feel called to lead it?
I have been active in IndyBar since I first became an attorney. I’ve served on committees, been a bar leader, chaired a Section, led our Foundation, and ultimately became President of the Association this year. IndyBar serves many things for me in my life. It provides me with friends, collegiality, and support that can be difficult to find.  It also provides me with CLEs and information to help me keep on top of current legal issues so I can continue to be the best attorney for my clients. Finally, it provides me with a way to give back to not only the legal community, but the broader Indianapolis community as well.

You not only manage being the president of IndyBar but run your own office, as well as have a family, how do you balance these sometimes competing interests?
I will be the first to say that work-life balance is a myth. Sometimes I feel like I am a great lawyer, but not a great mom, or great mom but not a great lawyer, but most of the time I think I’m pretty good at both. As I have practiced longer, I have learned different things to help me balance my busy schedule. For instance, I block my calendar so I have actual work time to complete client and volunteer matters. The first part of my day is for seeing clients, making calls, etc., and the second half of my day is for me to get my work done or attend a bar meeting. This allows me time to get both things done in a day.

Secondly, when I opened my practice I knew it had to be close to my kids' school because kids do not care if you have a client meeting. Being close allows me the flexibility to be close to my kids and work. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, I have a very supportive husband who helps with a lot of the household duties so that I can focus my attention on work. These things and others are the tools that help me succeed.

Other than Indybar, what do you like to do?
I am a voracious reader and I both read and listen to books constantly. I read probably 70 to 80 books a year. In any free moment, you can find me reading! I also love to walk (especially outside), watch movies, and spend time cheering on my beloved Hoosiers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Tell us a fact that few people know about you!
I am a huge IU fan. I have been to watch IU play football at every original Big Ten school. Go Hoosiers!
