Judge Charnette Garner was appointed to the Marion Superior Court in 2018, and began her judicial term on January 1, 2019.  In January 2023, she was selected to serve a two-year term as Presiding Judge of the Marion Superior Court. Before joining the bench, Judge Garner was Chief Counsel for the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office. She had previously worked for the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, with a focus in prosecuting Sex Crimes and Child Abuse cases. In addition, Judge Garner was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, and an Assistant Attorney General for the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.

We had an opportunity recently to catch up with Judge Garner after she returned from the Bench Bar conference.

You recently attended the Bench Bar Conference. What was your favorite thing about the conference this year?
My favorite thing about the conference was seeing attorneys I haven’t seen in a while.  I don’t run into attorneys like I used to at the City Market.  It is good to see each other in a casual setting.  I also enjoyed cheering on the Pacers in game 6 with my fellow bar members.

Why would you encourage people to attend the Bench Bar Conference next year?
People should go next year because it is a great way to meet new people, it is a great opportunity to network, and it is always a fun time.

If you had one piece of advice to give to a newer attorney, what would it be?
Become an active member of your local bar association.
