Michele Lorbieski, Women and the Law Division March Member of the Month
Your practice involves a lot of trial work, including probate litigation, trust litigation, and guardianships. What do you like most about it?
Many of my clients have never been involved in litigation before and their first experience comes at a time when they are either grieving the loss of a loved one or trying to help an elderly relative. The emotions and stakes are high, and it is very rewarding to be the person they trust to navigate them through the dispute as efficiently as possible.
Why did you become an attorney?
I grew up very poor and I watched a lot of television dreaming about how my adult life could be different. One of my favorite shows was LA Law because the female attorneys on that show were powerful in a way I had never observed in my life. I have to believe the voice of my younger self sitting in front of the television in the back of my mind has something to do with my choice to begin my practice after law school at a large firm in LA.
Who have been some of your female mentors or inspirations throughout the course of your career?
There are too many to count, but if I had to pick someone, I would say the female judges in our local community have been an inspiration.
You have been an active member of IndyBar, including the Women in the Law Division (WLD). What do you find most beneficial from your membership at IndyBar, particularly in WLD?
The community that the WLD offers to its members is priceless.
What has been your favorite WLD activity?
The mentoring program has always been a favorite of mine.
What is the best part of your job?
My colleagues have always been the best part of my practice. Practicing law is challenging and I am fortunate to be surrounded by a talented and supportive team.
What do you like to do outside of practicing law?
I love to travel and get outside to hike and camp. This September I'm fulfilling a bucket list item to hike the Half Dome at Yosemite.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were starting out as a lawyer?
Early in my practice I tried to model my writing and arguments in court after others to the detriment of developing my own style. I wish I understood earlier in my career that I would be more successful once I gave myself the freedom to have my own style.
