The Supreme Court published its decision in United States v. Arthrex on June 21, 2021, granting the Director of the USPTO final review in decisions made by Administrative Patent Judges in proceedings in front of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. The USPTO has provided guidance as to the near term effects of this decision in a series of questions and answers that were recently updated on July 20, 2021.

The USPTO is seeking comment on the current state of patent eligibility jurisprudence since the Alice and Mayo decisions by the Supreme Court in 2016, and the effect that these decision and subsequent decision by the Federal Circuit have had on investment and innovation.  These comments will be used in a report to be prepared by the USPTO.

On October 17, 2020, the Chinese Legislature passed the Fourth Amendment to the Chinese Patent Law, which will come into effect on June 1, 2021. As discussed in our previous post, the Fourth Amendment included several updates that help move Chinese Design Patent Law toward harmonization with the laws of most major markets. This article highlights and expands upon some of the major updates coming to Chinese Design Patent Law.

A selection committee acting on behalf of the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Foundation has announced the selection of Chief Judge Tanya Walton Pratt of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana as a recipient of the IndyBar's prestigious Luminary Award of Excellence. Chief Judge Pratt will be honored at the 2021 IndyBar Bench Bar Conference in Louisville, Kentucky on June 19.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Under the dynamic leadership of IndyBar President Jimmie McMillian, we're celebrating Juneteenth at Bench Bar to bring awareness to our members about this significant piece of history. More importantly, the Juneteenth workshop session will highlight and recognize the experiences and significant contributions that Black attorneys have made to our legal community.
