According to the United States Department of Labor, more than 46 million workers are currently covered by employer-provided retirement plans, and such plans often represent some of the most significant assets an individual owns. Almost every client estate planning attorneys encounter has a retirement plan which makes up part of his or her estate. As a result, it is important to understand the rules which govern retirement plans and the income tax consequences which may affect both clients and beneficiaries.

The Estate Planning and Administration Section is pleased to award Robert W. Elzer the 2018 Patricia Paxton Wagner Award for Excellence in Estate Planning and Administration. Pat Wagner, after whom the award is named, was a prominent and universally respected trust officer with the various banks that eventually became Bank One and then JPMorgan Chase.

As an Indiana estate planning attorney who was born and raised in Minnesota, I have watched the administration of Prince Rogers Nelson’s estate from a distance with great interest. Prince, of course, is a music icon who passed away in April 2016 without an estate plan, and from all accounts in the news media, the administration of his estate has been extremely complex.
