Taft welcomes Elizabeth Little as an attorney in the firm's Bankruptcy and Restructuring group in the Indianapolis office. Chad Oswald has joined Dentons in Indianapolis as of counsel. A member of Dentons’ Commercial Litigation practice, Chad focuses his practice on fiduciary, commercial and real estate disputes. He also represents small businesses, shareholders, closely held business members and large corporations in complex commercial litigation.

ChatGPT is all anyone can seem to talk about these days, from grandmas to grade schoolers.  That is how you know when a technology has captured the popular zeitgeist. Now, if you haven’t used it yet, or are unfamiliar with it, ChatGPT is what is called a ‘generative AI’ tool, that is rendered in the form of a chatbot.

By order of the Marion Circuit Court Judge, the Marion Circuit Court, Marion Superior Courts, Marion County Small Claims Courts, and the Marion County Clerk’s Office will be closed on Monday, June 19, 2023, in observance of Juneteenth.

A reminder, when the Court is closed, the Juvenile Detention Center, Initial Hearing Court and Juvenile Probation Intake at 25th & Keystone are still open and operational.

The nomination period has begun for the 2024 Boards of Directors for the Indianapolis Bar Association AND the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. There are also opportunities for service with the Association's Section and Division Executive Committees.  Volunteering with IndyBar is an invaluable opportunity to play a role in the future of our legal community.

The Section has filed eleven amicus briefs with the Indiana Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has granted transfer in over half of those cases to address the specific concerns raised by the Section. In other cases, the position advocated by the Section—such as concerns about citation of memorandum/unpublished opinions—has been addressed by rule amendments from the Indiana Supreme Court.

IndyBar’s Appellate Practice Section had an exceptional 2022. I had the pleasure of serving as chair, following Ruth Johnson and followed by Chris Bayh, both exceptional lawyers and leaders. Among other things, this year brought a return to in-person meetings of the Executive Committee. Thanks so much to you and the rest of our section’s roughly 150 members for your ongoing participation and support.

All, if you or your law firm are involved in doing condemnation work, please know that the Court of Appeals dismissed an appeal last week for failing to meet a 30-day transcript deadline imposed by a statute, notwithstanding that the Appellate Rules provide a 45-day deadline.

On October 7, the Indiana Supreme Court posted for comment some proposed changes to the Appellate Rules. Comments may be submitted online no later than November 7, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern).

In January 2022 when I (Josh) took the reins as chair of the IndyBar’s Appellate Practice Section, the Executive Committee underwent a friendly but notable transition: the “uh-mee-kuss” committee became the “AM-uh-kuss” committee. That’s because my good friend Ruth Johnson, 2021 section chair, and I stubbornly say the Latin word for friend differently. A similarly friendly shift came to the U.S. Supreme Court on the first Monday in October 2022.
