Summary

In an effort to curb maternal mortality rates in the U.S., Congress enacted the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA). The PWFA took effect in June of 2024 and provides accommodations for pregnant people in the workplace. Discussing the PWFA is important, as both employers and attorneys need to know employer responsibilities under the Act. This discussion is also essential given Indiana's high maternal mortality rates compared to the national average. Throughout this course you will:

  • Learn the basics of PWFA
  • Understand responsibilities of employers under the PWFA
  • Learn how the PWFA will impact pregnant workers
  • Analyze impact on health care organizations that provide care to pregnant people
  • Explore limitations and parameters of the PWFA that affect underrepresented groups
  • Discuss important factors of the PWFA that impact maternal mortality, particularly in communities of color throughout Indiana

Featuring: Adriana Figueroa, U.S. Department of Justice; Erin Macey, Indiana Poverty Institute; Sarah Pactor, American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana; Alessandra Rosa, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; Whitley Wynns MA, Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health
