On March 23rd, The Indianapolis Bar Association held its monthly Breakfast with the Bar event on Government and Public Interest. The attorneys participating shared their advice and wisdom regarding working in both the private and public sector. There were a diverse group of attorneys who were involved in many areas of government work such as litigation, policy creation, and contract drafting. The participating attorneys included: Molly Connor, Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP; Patrick Price, Office of Management and Budget, State Budget Agency; Evan Bartel, Indiana Professional Licensing Agency; Lindsey Moss, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP; Scott Chinn, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP; Taylor Kirklin, United States Attorney’s Office; Sabra Northam, Hallowell Consulting; Tenley Drescher-Rhoades, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP; Michelle Allen, Office of Administrative Law Proceedings; Judge Jennifer Harrison, Marion Superior Court; and Mitchell Osterday, Barnes & Thornburg LLP. The attorneys discussed the differences between private firms and government jobs, lobbying, clerkships, and advice for law students who are interested in government and public interest work. Although government work can be fast-paced, the attorneys all stated that this sector allows for an interesting and diverse work environment and opportunities for workplace mobility and litigation experience. Each group of attorneys recommended that students participate in trial practice, appellate clinic, and contract drafting during law school to effectively prepare for a job in the government and public interest. Overall, the event was successful and it provided a valuable experience for interested students.

Thank you to the attorneys who came to speak with the law students. The next Breakfast with the Bar will be held on April 14th and focus on Real Estate.
