This past Thursday October 6, the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Law Student Division hosted an Alternative Dispute Resolution themed breakfast with the bar. The food was great and the conversation was better!

I sometimes feel that law school is overly focused on abstract legal theories and often law students lose sight of the purpose of any effective legal system–settling disputes. In a formal sense, the vast majority of disputes are not highly technical and can be settled by a simple application of the relevant law. However, this fact overlooks the emotional issues underlying a dispute that are often brushed over in a courtroom.

The attorneys did a great job of communicating this fact and stressing that an attorney’s job is often to flush out emotional issues their client has with with their adversary as opposed legal issues, especially in an ADR setting.
