The Magistrate Deborah J. Shook Award for Excellence in Family Law - Family Law News

Starting in 2015, the IndyBar Family Law Section launched the Family Law Section Award.  The purpose of this award is to recognize those section members who have made contributions to the legal profession and the community.  Specifically, these pillars of our family law legal community have demonstrated a commitment to furthering knowledge of issues affecting families as they relate to laws and policies within the Bar and among colleagues as well as have shown a commitment to furthering the interests of families and the Indianapolis community at large.

This award is named in honor of past recipient Magistrate Deborah Shook, who was a bright light in our legal community. Deb, truly cared about the attorneys and litigants she encountered. Many members of the bar recognize her as a supportive and encouraging presence in an often stressful line of work.

We are again requesting your assistance in identifying those who have worked tirelessly to advance the cause of families. The award seeks to honor attorneys, both practicing and retired, other professionals, law firms, law students, paralegals and organizations who have shown a passion and dedication to promoting family law issues through advocacy and education.

What makes this award so unique is this is NOT an annual award.  Instead, it is presented in those circumstances when we choose to honor the displays of particular continued excellence from extraordinary members of our Section for their contributions to the advancement of Family Law.

Nominations will be accepted now through October 23, 2022.  In the event a deserving member will receive the award, it will be presented during the IndyBar’s Family Law Section Holiday Party later this year.  A short nomination form can be found at (indybar.org/famaward).

Previous award recipients include Carol Terzo (2015); Denise Hayden (2016); Magistrate Victoria Ransberger (2017); Rick Mann (2018); Magistrate Deborah Shook (2019); Hon. Alicia Gooden (2020); Kids' Voice (2021)

We thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration and look forward to hearing from you.
