This blog post has nothing to do with the law part of family law, but instead is focused on the family part of family law. Like many of you, I am again devastated by the recent mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, Dallas and so many other cities. My heart is crushed by the hate and that more innocent children were taken from this world. I have no wise words to share, but I am just checking on all of you. How are you? I am really asking and I am always here to talk if needed. One of the great things about our family law bar is the support and camaraderie. I know so many of our section members are open to talk, grab a coffee or just sit in silence together. Reach out to each other, right now especially. Our work is draining, and recent events remind us that time is precious. So, take care of yourselves, each other and your families.

In my time of recent reflection, I also think about the kids involved in our cases. I think about how these mass shootings continue to affect them. Most of the kids on our cases are likely already experiencing trauma associated with litigation and the reasons for the litigation. And now, they must witness even more trauma and be afraid to go to school, a place that should feel safe for them. Our role as family law attorneys is so unique and clients often look to us for advice in so many areas beyond whether to file a petition. So, I leave you all with this resource from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network about talking to kids about the recent shootings in hopes it might be helpful to you and maybe your clients. Wishing you all peace and love.
