On Wednesday, June 1, The Indianapolis Bar Association hosted a group of law students for June’s Breakfast with the Bar. This event highlighted Government Practice, which featured five attorneys practicing in that area of law, and gave students the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion.

Students heard from attorneys who practice within Indiana state agencies, a federal agency, and in private practice, focusing on legislative and executive branch lobbying. Many of these attorneys have prior experience in other government-oriented roles, which contributed to the variety of experiences that students heard about.

One lesson highlighted in many of the discussions was the importance of strong communication skills. The attorneys emphasized that decisions involving a government entity require input from many parties, and it is crucial to be professional and thoughtful in all interactions. Another tip was that students be deliberate about the career choices they make, while always remaining open to new opportunities.
