Sugary Drink Tax Proposed in Two California Cities - Taxation News

San Francisco and Berkeley, California have both proposed taxes on sugary drinks. San Francisco calls for a two-cent-per-ounce tax while Berkeley proposes a penny per ounce. While those in the bay area are hopeful that this time will be different, about 30 special taxes on sugary drinks have failed to pass in the last five years. Similar efforts, such as former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg's push to cap the size of sugary drinks sold, were also denied.
