New Law in Effect on High School Athletes' Head Injuries

The Indiana General Assembly approved over 200 new laws this year. Many became effective today, including one that will affect high school athletes and coaches. Under SEA 222, high school athletes must now be removed from play for at least 24 hours if there is a suspected concussion or head injury. Athletes must also be evaluated by and receive clearance from a licensed health care provider before returning to play following the 24-hour period.

Youth and high school football coaches will also be required to take concussion awareness courses at least once every two years. To read more about the new law and others that will take effect this year, click here.
