On Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022, five Indianapolis attorneys gathered with a group of law students at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law to discuss employment law during the IndyBar’s recent Breakfast with the Bar event. The attorneys, all of whom practice in some area of employment law, included Ron Gilbert, Janelle Kilies and AJ Simonton of Lewis Wagner LLP Melissa Macchia of Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP and Brooke Salazar of Apex Benefits.

During the event, law students inquired into the evolving nature of cmployment law and the day-to-day experience of an employment law attorney. The attorneys shared personal stories regarding how they became involved in employment law and what a “typical” day looks like in this practice area. The attorneys also recommend that any law student who is considering practicing in the field, or has an interest in employment law, to take an employment law course during their law school studies.

In addition, Salazar recommended that students truly interested in this subject area should join the Indiana State Affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). According to Salazar and the other attorneys, human resource departments serve as the front-line for many legal issues that arise in the employment law field.

All-in-all, it was a great hour of learning more about life as an employment law attorney. Thank you to our attorney volunteers for taking the time to attend and thank you to the 25 students who showed up to participate as well.
