Get to know members of the Commercial & Bankruptcy Law Section! First up this year is our section chair, Jason Mizzell.

Name, firm and position at firm:
My name is Jason Mizzell and I am an associate at Kroger Gardis & Regas LLP.

What is the focus of your practice?
I focus my practice in creditors' rights, bankruptcy, bankruptcy litigation, commercial litigation and e-discovery.

How long have you been practicing?
Ten years.

How long have you been in Indy?
Ten years! I moved to Indiana for law school and decided to stay.

What do you value most about the practice of law?
I value working to reach practical solutions. That’s one of my favorite parts of bankruptcy practice in general: practical, reality-orientated solutions are often the best outcomes for all parties.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
When COVID isn’t disrupting daily life and I’m not at work, I’m usually gaming (board, video, anything competitive) or spending time with my wife and my dog. When I can, I like to read non-fiction and have made a hobby out of studying the history of international relations – admittedly nerdy but fun it is fun.

What are some of your goals for the section this year? What are you most excited about for the section?
I would like to focus on keeping our practice area growing and fostering the newest members of the creditors rights’ and bankruptcy bar. I’m most excited about opportunities to work with law students to help them get started in their new career.

What’s one piece of advice you’ve learned from your years of experience in the field?
“Perfect is the enemy of good.” If I’ve learned anything, it’s that trying to make a pleading perfect is a recipe for disaster and unending revisions. There is no such thing as perfect.

Tell us about your favorite restaurant in Indianapolis.
I am a sucker for breakfast foods of all kinds so I’m partial to Café Patachou. Breakfast is the greatest meal known to humankind.

Anything else section members should know about you?
I have a dream to appear on Jeopardy. My trivia skills are pretty great but I have yet to earn a spot on the show have taken the test a handful of times now. So perhaps they’re not that great…
