Report: The State of Fair Housing in Indiana

On Jan. 3, 2022, the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana released a report on Mortgage Lending in Marion County showing that overall homeownership in the county has decreased by 8.5 percent, however, Black homeownership fell by nearly 20 percent over the past decade. Among the report’s key findings are the loss of 9,500 owner-occupied homes with a disproportional amount of those losses in Black communities. Additionally, low-to-moderate income communities and communities of color are being displaced due to high rent and rising home values. The report states, “[i]nstead of maintain (much less, building) homeownership and supporting communities, the current housing market is losing homeowners, pricing longtime residents out and prolonging many of the generational disparities through inequitable mortgage lending.” See the full report here.
