IndyBar’s latest Breakfast with the Bar event focused on commercial and corporate law, presenting students with the opportunity to network, engage with a variety of practitioners and dig deep into the nitty-gritty of the industry. The attorneys in attendance presented diverse views of the range of careers that students may pursue within the realm of these vast practice areas.
Heather Crockett, an attorney at the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, detailed her work in bankruptcy cases and the disputes commonly encountered when attempting to recover assets on behalf of the state. Christopher Dilworth of First American Title Insurance Company shared his advice with students when first starting their careers, stressing the importance of keeping an open mind during the job search. Brian Powers spoke with students about his journey from law school to becoming the founder and CEO of a tech startup that had recently been acquired by the digital contracts company Ironclad, Inc. Having experienced the formation, operation, and acquisition of a company as the CEO, Brian was able to answer students’ questions about the legal issues businesses face throughout their lifespan. Providing a different perspective of working for Ironclad, Inc. was Nicole Dobias, who discussed the intricacies of her work and her experience as an employee of a company that has been acquired. Last but certainly not least, Reynold (Ren) Berry, a partner at Rubin & Levin, provided students with an insight to his practice specializing in commercial law. Ren touched on the effectiveness of having knowledge that is an inch wide and a mile deep when choosing to practice in a highly specialized area.
Given the quality of the discussions, the hour flew by and students left with a greater understanding of the extensive career opportunities that await in the commercial and corporate law sphere. Be sure to be on the lookout for IndyBar’s next great Breakfast with the Bar event!
