On Thursday, October 21, the IndyBar Law Student Division provided an opportunity for law students to learn from and connect with local practitioners in the field of wills, trusts and estate planning. These impressive practitioners shared their wealth of professional knowledge and experience, giving law students great insight into the practice of law in this field.

In attendance were experienced local attorneys, including Rhonda Breman and Elizabeth Schlueter, Co-Founding Partners of Schlueter Breman, LLC; Sara McClammer, Partner at Bennett & McClammer; Whittley Pike, current Senior Associate Director for Professional Development at the IU McKinney School of Law and former attorney at Randall, Gentry & Pike P.C.; and Aaron Westlake, Planned Giving Officer at Riley Children’s Foundation. The attorneys provided forward-thinking and practical advice during the breakfast. They provided an overview of the will-drafting process and discussed best practices when counseling clients who are making legal arrangements for their eventual passing or incapacitation. The attorneys also discussed their own career paths, teaching each student that every experience and connection could lead to present and future professional growth and opportunity. To gain more experience in the field of wills, trusts and estate planning, the attorneys advised three main routes: (1) look into applicable courses offered at IU McKinney, (2) don’t be afraid to reach out and network with local practitioners and (3) take advantage of all pro bono work and experiential learning opportunities available in the local community.

Thank you to the five practitioners for sacrificing their valuable time to come discuss their own career paths and current roles, as well as to the many students who came out to take an interest and learn about this field of law.
