Trial by Zoom?

While we are all ready to have COVID-19 in our rear-view mirrors, it, unfortunately, will affect almost every part of our lives for the foreseeable future. As courts around the country try to continue “business as usual," they have turned to new resources and technologies such as utilizing video teleconferencing services like Zoom to conduct trials.

This article from Law.com discusses the benefits one Florida lawyer sees in utilizing remote video conferencing in trials. Namely, the costs associated with trial can be drastically reduced for our clients. For instance, witnesses can give testimony from anywhere they have a stable internet connection. This can eliminate expensive travel and hourly expenses saving a lot of time and money. The attorney in this article believes that the remote trial he participated in was more efficient and that the evidence took center stage. While this technology has significant limitations and many lawyers understandably would prefer litigating in-person, moving forward we can learn from this experience and use this opportunity to modernize our age-old profession.
