A new telemedicine law will take effect in Indiana on July 1, 2016, replacing the Indiana Telehealth Pilot Program, which expires on the same date. Governor Mike Pence signed the bill (House Act No. 1263) following the success of the pilot program. The new statute was passed almost unanimously by the House and Senate.

A new chapter in the Indiana Code (IC 25-1-9.5) has been created by the bill, which implements a variety of telemedicine practice standards and remote prescribing rules for the state. Among the impacts of the new law, the Board of Medicine may be required to rewrite some of its current regulations if they conflict with the new provisions of the statute.
