On Wednesday, January 21st, the IndyBar Law Student Division hosted Breakfast with the Bar: Tax Law at IU McKinney’s Law Library. The event gave students the opportunity to meet attorneys and officials working in tax-related roles and to see how tax issues come up in everyday practice—particularly in real estate matters, income tax, and case analysis.

Panelists included Hon. Justin L. McAdam (Indiana Tax Court), Brandee A. Chanin (Indiana Board of Tax Review), Delainey Deitch (PwC), Kelly Kelly (Indiana Department of Revenue), Caitlyn Morrison (Stoll Keenon Ogden), Christopher Russell (Indiana Department of Revenue), Daniel T. Shackle (FBT Gibbons), and Joshua Schlake (Ice Miller LLP).

Attendees heard practical perspectives from professionals across law firms, government entities, and the private sector. Panelists shared approachable advice on how students can build useful skills for tax work—like spotting issues, reading cases closely, and understanding how tax considerations shape business and real estate decisions. The conversation also included time for informal questions, giving students a chance to learn more about different career paths and what day-to-day practice looks like.

Thank you to all our participating panelists and to the IndyBar Law Student Division for organizing another valuable program for the Indianapolis legal community.

The Law Student Division’s next Breakfast with the Bar will be held on Tuesday, February 11th and will feature the Insurance & Medical Malpractice edition. Students will have the opportunity to connect with attorneys practicing in these areas and learn more about the work and career paths available in this space.
