On January 16th, the Indianapolis Bar Association held its monthly Breakfast with the Bar event at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. This month’s breakfast highlighted Big Law. Over 40 students joined seven member-practitioners for an interesting discussion about the life of an attorney working at a large law firm. The participating attorneys included: Carrie Doehrmann and Scott Krapf of Frost Brown Todd LLP, Christine Duncan of Barnes & Thornburg LLP, Kayla Ernst and Jacob Butz of Ice Miller LLP, Dan Long of Quarles & Brady LLP, Andi Metzel of Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, and Tom Prible of Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP.

The attorneys discussed numerous aspects of life in Big Law, including how to navigate the path to joining a large law firm. Additionally, the attorneys shared their journeys to their current roles at each  of their respective firms. Many of the attorneys compared the pros and cons of working in Big Law versus smaller firms, touching on topics such as work-life balance, selecting a practice area, and networking opportunities within the Indianapolis legal community. Furthermore, the attorneys provided insights into the day-to-day responsibilities of Big Law associates and partners, emphasizing how these differ from the responsibilities at smaller firms. Students were eager to learn more about the transition from law school to life in Big Law, as well as strategies for securing a summer associate position. The event offered students a chance to connect with accomplished attorneys who were generous with their advice and guidance. Overall, the event was a tremendous success and an invaluable resource for aspiring Big Law attorneys.

Thank you to all the attorneys who came to speak with the law students. The next Breakfast with the Bar will be held on February 13. It will highlight the Health Law Section of the Indianapolis Bar Association. More details to come!
