On Thursday, November 14th, IndyBar’s Law Student Division hosted Breakfast with the Bar: Young Attorneys in partnership with the Young Lawyers Division of IndyBar. Several IU McKinney law students were in attendance to learn about the transition to practice after law school from board members of the Young Lawyers Division. Our panelists included: Chloe Craft, Krieg DeVault; Chase Howard, Indiana Commercial Courts; April Keaton, Office of the Indiana Attorney General; Mary Morris, IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law; Chuck Niblick, Ice Miller LLP; Chris Roberts, Woodard Emhardt Henry Reeves & Wagner LLP.

Students discussed a wide variety of topics with the panelists and learned that being a young attorney is about making connections in the legal field, learning skills from the attorneys you are surrounded with, and to seek out connections with those who are different from you. The panelists encouraged the students to embrace the opportunities that law school provides for experiential learning emphasizing clinics, externships, moot court, and law review.

The panelists in attendance came from a wide range of backgrounds such as large firms, small firms, government works, and the courts allowing students to see the many options available to them post-graduation. Although the panelists work in different environments and have various work backgrounds, they all recommended that students take a variety of classes where they have interest and to start networking with attorneys early, as the connections students make can lead to a job down the road.

The IndyBar Law Student Division thanks our panelists for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend Breakfast with the Bar. We also thank the Young Lawyers Division for sending lawyers to speak at this event and helping with its success. This was the final Breakfast with the Bar of the year. The next Breakfast with the Bar will take place in January of 2025.
