On Thursday, September 12th, IndyBar’s Law Student Division hosted its first Breakfast with the Bar of the academic year. Several Indianapolis area attorneys working in Intellectual Property (IP) Law joined students for an hour to discuss what it was like to work within the field. Our panelists included: Catherine Callahan, Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP; John Emanuele, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP; Victor Indiano, Indiano Law Group; Malissa Magiera, United States Patent and Trademark Office; Esther Sandlin, Ice Miller LLP; Robert Sharp, Eli Lilly and Company; David Wong, Barnes & Thornburg LLP; Douglas Yerkson, Bose McKinney & Evans LLP.

We are excited to share over 50 students attended this month's breakfast! Conversations with attorneys included a wide variety of IP topics. IP work primarily focuses on copyright, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets, but the practice area is always changing, creating a complex and exciting area to practice! Our panelists encouraged the students to embrace the evolving field with an open mind. Additionally, networking was a key skill that panelists recommended students practice.

Our panelists in attendance work in diverse environments ranging from large firms, in-house counsel, to government work, providing unique perspectives  available to those interested in pursuing IP law post-graduation. Some courses the panelists recommended to students were Intellectual Property Law, International Intellectual Property Law, Intellectual Property Transactions & Licensing, Patent Law, Patent Litigation, Copyright Law, and encouraged applying for the Eli Lilly and Company, Intellectual Property Externship and Intellectual Property Law Clinic.

The IndyBar Law Student Division thanks all our panelists for taking time out of their busy schedules to participate in this month's Breakfast with the Bar. McKinney law students interested in obtaining an Intellectual Property Law Graduate Certificate can contact their advisor in Student Affairs or at osalaw@iu.edu with any questions or to schedule a progress review meeting.

The Law Student’s Division’s next Breakfast with the Bar will be held on Thursday, October 17th with a focus on practicing in a solo or small firm. Any student who wishes to attend can register at: https://www.indybar.org/?pg=events&evAction=showDetail&eid=290369. As always, registration is free for all law students!
