The IndyBar is saddened to note the passing of 2004 Indianapolis Bar Association President Gary Klotz on Sunday, December 16. Klotz, a long-time partner at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP, was admitted to the bar in 1978 and had retired from the firm at the end of 2017.

Klotz earned his Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, in 1974. He majored in political science and briefly attended the Johns Hopkins School of International Relations in Bologna, Italy. He then returned to Indiana in 1975 and earned his J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.

Following law school, he first practiced with the Indianapolis firm of Smith Morgan & Ryan. In 1981, Klotz joined Bingham Summers Welsh & Spilman, which would ultimately become Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP. During his time at the firm, Klotz served his clients with a wide range of legal services, including banking and corporate advice. Most notably, he served as the principal liaison with the firm’s legal work for the Gatorade Trust, which holds the rights for the original inventors of Gatorade.

In addition to service with the IndyBar, Klotz also represented the bar on a national level as president of the Metropolitan Bar Caucus from 2008-2009. Klotz served on the boards of several civic institutions including the Indiana Legal Foundation, the Day Nursery and the Indianapolis Ballet and was an ardent supporter of his alma mater, DePauw University.

Klotz was a mentor and a friend to many in the legal community, including 1998 IndyBar President Phil Isenbarger, a  partner at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP.

“For many years, Gary was the partner who oversaw the relationship on one of Bingham’s most important and valued clients. He was a special friend and mentor to so many at Bingham and was the reason many came and stayed with the firm,” says Isenbarger.

“He extended his special gifts to the Indianapolis Bar Association and touched so many through his service, including his tenure as President in 2004. He will be missed but remembered not for how he died, but for how he lived.”

A celebration of Klotz’s life will be held on May 25, 2019 to commemorate a life well lived and to remember his loyal and generous friendship. Additional details for the celebration will be shared by the IndyBar as they become available.
