Continuing Legal Education
Anyone who works with people in distress on a regular basis may be at risk of compassion fatigue: a combination of burnout and secondary trauma that can significantly decrease our effectiveness at work and in life. This session generates discussion of compassion fatigue and burnout as well as the impact this has on professional conduct, including competence, diligence and communication, with reference to the corresponding rules.
Participants learn to recognize when their work is impacting them in ways that reduce effectiveness. We also work on a personal plan to increase resilience and mitigate their risk of developing compassion fatigue. In addition, our speakers provide an overview of services available through the Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP), with special emphasis on Admission and Discipline Rule 31 and JLAP confidentiality.
Speakers
Diane Black and Ruth Johnson, Indiana Public Defender Council; Loretta Oleksy, Indiana Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program Moderator: Andrea Ciobanu, Ciobanu Law PC
