On October 5, 2017, eight members of the IndyBar Young Lawyers Division (“YLD”) volunteered at Gleaners Food Bank in Indianapolis. Gleaners was founded in 1980 and has the mission to lead the fight against hunger in central and southeast Indiana by collecting, storing, and distributing food to those in need. Gleaners distributes food to hungry Hoosiers through a network of more than 230 partner agencies, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. Gleaners is part of the Feeding America network of food banks. Feeding America is a nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provides food and services to more than 46 million people each year.
At Gleaners, the YLD members received quick training before working in the food pantry by stocking shelves, passing out food to families visiting the food pantry, carrying bags to cars and various other tasks needed to successfully run the pantry for the evening. Over 400 families were served in just three hours.
Thank you to all of the participants and to Gleaners for its hospitality to the YLD members and for the great work it does in Indiana!
