The advice to "set goals" and "visualize the end point" is not something to discard, but in Nancy Scott Degan's article, she offers a different take on how to become successful.
Degan writes that she never set a goal to become Litigation Section Chair - a volunteer position at the head of 50,000 section members - she "simply volunteered to do something that interested me".
Degan talks about how over the years, her volunteered positions in avenues in which she felt compelled added up to her current position and professional success. It may be hard to see where these steps may one day lead you, but Degan's advice is something to keep in mind from the start.
