Get to know members of the Sports & Entertainment Law Section! This blog series highlights section members, their practice and their personal interests. Take a seat and get to know them! This week's post features Elizabeth Ellis of Emmis Communications Corporation.

Name, firm and position at firm?
My name is Elizabeth Ellis and I am the Vice President & Corporate Counsel at Emmis Communications Corporation.  I previously worked at Emmis from 2000 to 2005 prior to attending law school and have been an attorney at Emmis for three years.

What is the focus of your practice?
I am responsible for a wide variety of legal issues arising from the day-to-day business operations of Emmis’ radio division and its magazine, Indianapolis Monthly.  My primary areas of responsibility include risk management, contract negotiation, employment matters, litigation
and intellectual property protection.
How long have you been practicing?
It is hard for me to believe, but I am quickly coming up on ten years since graduating from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in December 2008.

How long have you been in Indy?
I am originally from Pennsylvania, but moved to Indiana during college at Indiana University and have remained a Hoosier ever since. There really is something very special about Hoosier hospitality!

What do you value most about the practice of law?
What I value most about practicing law is that I continue to learn and develop my legal skills every single day. That is very rewarding and motivates me to absorb as much knowledge as I can from a host of different sources – our company’s business teams, other attorneys, publications, cases, seminars, etc. The more that I am able to absorb from these sources, the more value I can immediately add back to the company in my role.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with family and friends, singing in a contemporary band at my church, volunteering in the community, reading and (true confession time) binge-watching old episodes of The Office.

What are some of your goals for the section this year? Or what are you most excited about for the section?
As a new member of the section, I’m most excited about learning from and sharing with each other about the wide range of issues facing lawyers practicing in this field and identifying new approaches to tackling those issues.

What’s one piece of advice you’ve learned from your years of experience in the field?
Develop a small, close group of “go-to” people who help each other to navigate the highs and lows inherent in the practice of law. This is invaluable in helping lawyers to keep a healthy perspective
in what can be a very demanding field.

Tell us about your favorite restaurant in Indianapolis.
My favorite restaurant downtown is Nada. I love the atmosphere and the unique spin on taco flavors. Try their guacamole – you won’t regret it  Plus, who doesn’t love getting a small doughnut at the end of the meal?
Anything else section members should know about you?
I would really enjoy getting to meet other section members practicing in this field. Send me an email at and let’s connect for coffee so that we can get to know each other better.

If you would like to be featured in the Take Ten Q+A series, send your responses to the above questions to Kara Sikorski at and stay tuned for future installments!
