Sports and Entertainment Law News

Posted on: Jan 30, 2017

Jason: Hi. I’m Jason Bonikowske.

Cate: And I’m Cate Sabatine. Jason and I co-chair the Sports & Entertainment Law Section.

Jason: Our section has big plans for 2017 - Our annual Racing Attorneys Conference, which this year will be held in Indianapolis, our annual Indianapolis Indians outing with the McKinney law students, and CLE programming focused on hot issues in sports and entertainment law.

Cate: Sounds like it’s going to be a good year.  Sports and entertainment lawyers do know how to have fun!

Cate: Jason I think we should take this opportunity to dispel some rumors I have heard about our section.

Jason: Rumors?

Cate: Yep. Rumors. Like the rumor that you have to practice sports or entertainment law to be a member of our section.

Jason: Not true. Any IndyBar member – student or attorney - can join our section.  In fact, we encourage this as it broadens our network and extends the offerings we can provide for our section members.

Cate: How about the rumor that our section’s events are not applicable or relevant to attorneys and law students who do not practice sports or entertainment law, or have an interest in it?

Jason: Again, not true. Our section’s events and programming touch many different areas of the law such as intellectual property, labor and employment, antitrust, litigation and corporate transactions, just to name a few.

Cate: Very true.  A lot of us on the executive committee are also on the business side of our companies, and this is true of many of our section members also.  Our CLEs and social events are a great way to get to know other sports and entertainment attorneys in your community yes, but it’s also a great way to meet other attorneys who want to expand their knowledge of sports and entertainment issues or just have a love for sports and entertainment in general.

Cate: How about the rumor that our section’s executive committee has been voted the best looking IndyBar committee four years in a row?

Jason: Oh that one is 100% true.

Cate: We look forward to new members joining our section this year and we are excited to meet you.  If you are a returning member, thank you for continuing your support of our section.  Any section members should please let us know if you want to be more involved in our section in some way, and we’d be happy to discuss with you and get you more involved.
