On April 25, 2017, the IndyBar Paralegal Committee announced the giveaway of a $25 Visa gift card to be awarded to a randomly-drawn winner. To be eligible, hopefuls sent in a submission for the upcoming edition of our newsletter, Paralegals Tip the Balance. We have a WINNER - Roxanne Shirley of Faegre Baker Daniels LLP!
During a busy afternoon in the office, I took a break to give her a call and let her know she had won. Roxanne works at Faegre Baker Daniels’ Northside office in the Wealth Management Section. Interestingly, she began her career with the firm when it was Baker Daniels in 1980 and rejoined them in 2010. Between these two periods, Roxanne stayed home to raise her family which she had hoped would be one of those “grass is greener on the other side” situations. While caring for her family was very important, the grass was not necessarily as green as she had hoped! Roxanne did not immediately rejoin the Faegre fold when she returned to work, but once she did find her way to her “work family,” she has not looked back since.
Roxanne explained that her days are filled with drafting wills and other estate-type documents for a variety of clients; some include veterans and cancer survivors. She shared that she’s prepared these documents for “heroes” that don’t bask in the limelight but walk amongst the common man. These work duties sparked a desire to give back to the community, and she does just that by serving as a site coordinator for IndyBar’s Ask A Lawyer event whenever possible. During a recent 2016 Ask A Lawyer function, she met Teresa Asbury of the IndyBar Paralegal Committee. Teresa shared with Roxanne information about the Teddy Bear Challenge which our Paralegal Committee participates in each year, and Roxanne took it upon herself to challenge her co-workers to clean out their closets as well as their children’s closets and give! As a result of her willingness to get involved, Faegre Baker Daniels contributed 500 bears amongst their offices to the 2016 Teddy Bear Challenge!
You will see that the article she penned and contributed to this newsletter talks about her pro bono work. It’s a passion she has because her work days leave her feeling somewhat limited in the use of her many skills and talents, so doing pro bono work allows her to “make the world a better place!” It's noteworthy to mention she made the Faegre Baker Daniels “Pro Bono Honor Roll” for 2016! Our hats are off to you, Roxanne, for sharing your passion to give back with all of us, and may we all strive to add a little more selflessness to our days.
