The Indianapolis Bar Association, Paralegal Executive Committee, the Indiana Paralegal Association and the Indiana State Bar Association, Affiliate Committee, came together on May 24, 2017 for their annual joint meeting.

Susan Jacobs, Associate Executive Director of ISBA, Arlene Morris, President of IPA, and Laura Thirion, Vice Chair of the IndyBar Paralegal Committee, represented their respective organizations in the annual exchanging of mugs ceremony. The exchanging of the respective mugs is an annual tradition amongst these organizations to show camaraderie, gratitude and respect among these Indiana organizations and the paralegal profession itself.

After presentation of the exchanging of mugs, we sat in awe and inspiration listening to Anita Haworth of Indiana University Health speak to this extraordinary group about the paralegal profession. Anita spoke about the different roles she has played in her legal career and identified with audience about where the paralegal profession started, where it’s been and where it’s going. She was adamant in explaining that the profession is ours and asked how we want to see our professional future, whether that be through regulations, CLE requirements, more involvement in leadership roles and the paralegal profession.

Walking away from Anita’s presentation made me feel rejuvenated about why I chose the career path I did. Bottom line – Professionalism – Responsibility – Leadership – Repeat. Get involved and make a difference in the profession you chose. You chose what you do for a living because it meant/means something to you. Let’s make our profession the best it can be and be known amongst our peers and colleagues. The time is now – let’s make the paralegal profession better than it’s ever been!
