New Civil Cases in USDC Northern District of Indiana MUST be filed electronically:

Effective February 3, 2014, all new civil cases filed by counsel will be filed electronically in CM/ECF. This procedure will become mandatory as of February 24, 2014. Until then, the Clerk's Office will continue to accept new civil cases filed on paper, if necessary. Please view On-Line Captivate Training Modules Electronic Civil Case Opening and Docketing a Complaint or Notice of Removal prior to e-filing your first new civil case (click on the ECF/PACER tab on the blue bar above, then under ECF Training, select On-Line Captivate Training Modules). Instruction manuals are also available (Please see Attorney Case Opening Manual and Guide to Entering Parties in CM/ECF).

New Civil Cases in USDC Southern District of Indiana CAN be filed electronically:

Electronic civil case opening allows attorneys to file new civil and miscellaneous cases via CM/ECF, rather than initiating new cases in paper form at the Clerk’s Office. Attorneys interested should consider the following requirements:

  •  Participating attorneys must be registered for electronic filing via CM/ECF and the must be admitted to practice in the Southern District of Indiana. Attorneys who are not yet registered with a CM/ECF login and password may use the ECF Registration Form.
  • Attorneys and/or support staff at participating offices may attend a free training course to learn procedures for filing new civil and miscellaneous cases via CM/ECF. Training sessions are held upon request at the courthouse and online via webinar. For more information, contact the Clerk's Office at (317) 229-3700.
  •  The filing of new civil complaints and notices of removal via CM/ECF includes electronic payment of the $400 filing fee via Pay.gov. Payment may be submitted via either ACH (checking/savings account) or credit card transaction.

Training Materials for Attorney Case Opening:

  • Online training modules are available for Electronic Civil Case Opening. Each of the two interactive tutorials is approximately 30 minutes in length. Before viewing an online training module, it may be helpful to print the sample documents for the training cases.
