First Annual Employment Law Seminar

Description of seminar: This seminar will cover basic employment law issues of interest to small employers without dedicated human resources professionals. Presenters will be selected from the Labor and Employment Section. The IndyBar is working with trade organizations to promote this seminar with a particular emphasis on restaurants and other small employers.
Purposes: This seminar will serve a two-fold purpose. First, this seminar is a way for the IndyBar’s Labor and Employment Section to serve the public by helping to educate small employers about employment law and their obligations under it. Second, this seminar will provide speaking opportunities for Labor and Employment Section members.
Introduction: What laws apply to you and what do they require? (30 minutes)
The Essentials: Best practices for hiring, disciplining, and firing (1 hour)
Hot Topics in Wages: overtime, deductions, tips (1 hour)
Recordkeeping: employee personnel files and related information (including I-9s) (30 minutes)
NOTE: All topics should focus on small employers, particularly restaurants.

If you are a member of the IndyBar’s Labor & Employment Section and interested in speaking at this seminar, please submit the following to Chris Walsh
by June 15, 2014
. Selected speakers will be required to submit their written materials and a Power Point presentation by September 15, 2014.

Items to note:
- Turning in a presentation abstract does not guarantee you a spot on the agenda. The seminar planning committee will select speakers from among the proposals. You will be notified if you are chosen and you will then be sent a speaker contract, on which your signature is required.
- Speakers are not compensated for this seminar, nor will speakers be reimbursed for any expenses.
- Because this seminar is directed toward non-attorney employers, CLE cannot be granted to attendees or presenters.
