Greetings again fellow members of the IndyBar Labor & Employment Section. During Q3, the section continued to deliver high quality educational programming and networking opportunities. In July, Professor Barbara J. Fick presented her always-entertaining and informative review of U.S. Supreme Court decisions with implications on the field of labor and employment. In August, Patricia Lewis, District Director for the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor, provided our members with an overview of the new regulations changing the white-collar exemption requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”). Earlier in September, more than 30 of our members (and their guests) enjoyed cocktails and appetizers at Hotel Tango, a locally owned and operated artisan distillery. Since we had so much fun in Q3, why stop now? On October 26, the section will host its third annual Employment Law Seminar for Small Businesses. The seminar will focus on employment law challenges facing small businesses, including wage/hour issues, non-compete agreements, accommodation & leave issues, I-9 compliance, and common termination issues. The seminar will take place at the Marriott North Hotel and will include a continental breakfast. Please encourage your small business contacts to attend. On November 15, the section will host a CLE/meet & greet with the Indianapolis District Office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The agenda will include an introduction of the new District Director and Regional Attorney as well as recent regulatory updates – including the guidance on retaliation and wellness programs. The EEOC Meet & Greet event will take place at Bent Rail Brewery off the Monon Trail (more details to come). We hope you can join us for these events.
