Amazon recently launched its IP Accelerator program in an effort to connect small businesses that sell on Amazon with a select group of IP law firms that Amazon has vetted. Amazon’s intent behind this movement is primarily to assist sellers in achieving trademark protection for their brands. As an perk for using this program, sellers will gain access to Amazon’s Brand Registry as soon as a trademark application is filed; however, this perk is only offered if the application is filed using one of the law firms participating in the Accelerator program. This is just one more example of how Amazon is shaking up the global economy but it also presents interesting and possible ethical questions for practitioners. Read more about the program here.
